Predawn darkness envelops a wet asphalt intersection in Sapporo, Japan, where heavy rain reflects the harsh white glare of overhead streetlamps. A cluster of ceramic substation insulators stands vertically near a utility pole, their ribbed surfaces sparkling with water droplets as they catch the artificial light. Condensation rests on the base of the nearest lamp post, blurring the metal fixture slightly.
