Store Entrance at Late At Night Light in Osaka
by Christy Mack
A wet asphalt sidewalk glistens under the harsh fluorescent glow of a narrow Osaka convenience store entrance at night. Rain-slicked pavement reflects the red and white signage of the storefront, where a row of colorful umbrellas stands in a metal rack near the door. A lone commuter in a dark suit pauses on the threshold, shaking water from a black umbrella before stepping inside. The glass door reveals shelves stocked with bento boxes and drinks, casting a bright rectangular patch of light onto the dark street. Puddles ripple near the curb, mirroring the neon signs of passing cars and the distant silhouette of a high-rise building. The quiet, transient moment of urban life in Japan after midnight.
