Bright late morning light floods a narrow, paved laneway in Adelaide’s East End, casting sharp, geometric shadows from overhead power lines and the leafy canopy of a mature Moreton Bay fig tree onto the textured sandstone walls. A woman in a light linen shirt pauses beside a wrought-iron railing, using a small, bristled nail brush to scrub a patch of lichen from the stone base of a heritage building. Beside her, resting on a low concrete step, sits a pair of heavy garden shears with worn wooden handles, their blades catching the harsh sunlight.
