Still Life in Naples
by Jake McGuire
Under the harsh, shadowless glare of Neapolitan noon, a narrow service alley opens onto a sun-bleached facade where a rusted cabinet latch clings to a faded teal door, its orange corrosion contrasting sharply with the peeling paint. A white plastic laundry basket, heavy with damp linens, sits on the cracked concrete step, while a small rattan stool rests nearby, its woven texture catching the flat light. Above, terracotta flower pots hold blooming hydrangeas, their blue petals vibrant against the warm stone. In the background, a metal magazine rack leans against a wall, holding a stack of local papers, and a small electric table fan hums silently in the shade, its grille reflecting the bright sky.
