Still Life in Milan
by Ashton Bird
A narrow Milanese alleyway glows under the deep blue twilight, illuminated by the warm, amber spill from a ground-floor trattoria window. Outside, a weathered metal mailbox stands anchored to the stucco wall, its surface marked by rust around the hinge screws and faded postal stickers. Leaning casually against the base of the wall is a battered skateboard, its deck scuffed from daily use, resting near a cluster of terracotta plant pots holding vibrant green herbs. The wet cobblestones reflect the shop's interior light, creating a shimmering path that leads toward the darkened street beyond. A passerby’s shadow stretches across the pavement, hinting at the quiet, candid rhythm of evening life in the city.
