Stall Setup in Shanghai
by Jamie Sutton
Under the gray, diffused light of a Shanghai dusk, a narrow alleyway glistens with recent rain. A vendor’s makeshift stall is anchored by stacked plastic folding stools, their red surfaces slick with water. Beside them, a metal colander rests upside down on a wet wooden crate, catching a faint reflection of a nearby neon sign. The scene is cluttered but functional, with steam rising from a nearby pot, blurring the edge of a folding stool. The damp concrete floor mirrors the scattered items, at the base of the composition in the gritty reality of street food preparation. The light is flat and cool, showing the textures of wet plastic and worn wood without harsh shadows.
