Stacked Stools in Marseille

by Katrina Horton

First light after rain washes the Vieux-Port in a slick, reflective sheen, mirroring the pastel yellow and terracotta facades of the historic district. A small café terrace on the quai remains closed, its metal folding stools stacked upside down on tables to protect them from the damp. Rainwater pools in the grooves of the worn stone pavement, catching the muted blue of the early sky. In the background, the silhouette of Notre-Dame de la Garde rises above the rooftops, its white stone glowing faintly against the gray clouds. A lone worker in a bright orange vest sweeps water from the entrance of a shuttered bakery, his movement the only disruption in the quiet, wet stillness of the port.
