Spilled Water in Miami

Flat noon light bleaches the pastel stucco of a Miami Heights bungalow, turning the air into a shimmering haze. On the concrete driveway, a faded pink watering jug sits tipped on its side, spilling a thin ribbon of water that evaporates instantly in the heat. Beside it, a Papillon with perked ears and a white coat stands alert, its gaze fixed on a sliding glass door. Inside, the reflection of a potted fern and a patterned rug is visible through the glass, blurred by the heat distortion. A broom leans against the exterior wall, its bristles dusted with sand.
