A large Spanish Mastiff lies sprawled across a wooden window seat, its heavy fawn coat catching soft side light filtering through the glass. The dog's broad muzzle and folded ears rest low, showing the breed's characteristic droop and texture. To the left, a worn rug with frayed edges peeks out from under the animal's chest, at the base of the animal in a space of daily life. A simple brass candlestick sits on the sill nearby, its surface dulled by use rather than polished for display. The composition balances the dog's mass against the empty corner of the room where fine particles float in the late afternoon beam. Faded paint on the window frame and a slightly uneven cushion add to the lived-in atmosphere of this quiet apartment.
