Sorting Yams in Accra

by Jon Sharpe

In the dappled shade of a Korle Bu market stall, a woman in a vibrant kente cloth wraps her waist while she sorts through a basket of bright orange yams. Behind her, the wall is painted a faded but cheerful turquoise, against the rough texture of stacked terracotta bowls used for storing ground provisions. A worn blue and white porcelain plate, chipped at the rim, sits precariously on a wooden crate filled with dried red peppers. The late afternoon sun cuts through the corrugated iron roof, casting long, sharp shadows across the dusty concrete floor. A frayed apron hangs from a rusted hook, its pockets bulging with small change.
