Snowboarder Air Near Carmel Market Tel Aviv
by Joyce Wells
Flat gray clouds press low over the urban fringe, diffusing the noon light into a soft, even sheet. A snowboarder hangs suspended mid-air, knees bent sharply against the backdrop of dry, brown fields. The board, angled steeply beneath boots, displays a graphic pattern of faded red and white. Behind the athlete, the distant outline of market stalls and low-rise buildings marks the location near Carmel Market. Late autumn leaves cling sparsely to the few remaining trees, their edges crisp and brittle. The rider's jacket is a heavy olive green, zipped to the chin, against the pale sky. A shadow of the board falls faintly on the grass below, defining the height of the jump. The texture of the snowboard's base shows fine scratches from recent use. The athlete's focused gaze locks forward, muscles taut in a moment of suspended motion.
