Sniffing Laundry in Tainan
by Fred Garcia
Pale morning light spills over the tiled roof of a narrow alley in Tainan, illuminating a clothesline strung between weathered concrete pillars. A Kerry Blue Terrier, fur matted with dew, stands on its hind legs to sniff at a pair of drying rubber slippers, its shadow stretching long across the damp asphalt. Below, a stainless steel food cart sits idle, its surface marked by faint fingerprints and the dull gleam of early use. Beside it, a stack of colorful majolica plates rests under a plastic tarp, their floral patterns vibrant against the gray stone pavement. The quiet transition from night to day, where domestic clutter meets the promise of breakfast service.
