Slippers at First Light in in Dublin, Ireland

Slippers at First Light

by Valerie Huff

Rain-slicked Georgian limestone facades reflect the pale, diffused first light of a Dublin morning, casting long, cool shadows across the wet pavement of a narrow lane. A brass umbrella stand, dented and tarnished, sits near the curb, its hooks holding a single, dripping black umbrella that leans precariously against the wet stone. Nearby, a pair of worn leather slippers rests on the doorstep of a closed bakery, the leather darkened by moisture. The street is empty of people, save for the rhythmic drip of water from a wrought-iron gutter onto the cobblestones.
