Under the heavy orange glow of a sodium streetlamp in Boston’s North End, a cramped apartment window reveals a cluttered kitchen counter lit by mixed artificial light. A cast iron skillet sits on the stove, emitting a faint, cool steam haze that drifts upward into the warm yellow spill from above. Beside it, a silver pie server rests against a stack of ceramic plates, its handle catching a sharp reflection from a nearby neon sign. The window frame is painted chipped green, typical of the row houses, and outside, the wet pavement reflects the chaotic mix of red tail lights and white headlamps from the narrow street below.
