Skiff in Essaouira at Flat Noon Light

by Kirk Wells

Under the flat, bleaching noon light of Essaouira, a fisherman’s small wooden skiff rests on the pale sand, its hull scarred by salt and sun. Beside it, a cluster of bright blue plastic crates holds the morning’s catch, while a faded red tiffin tin sits precariously on a crate lid, dented from years of transport. Nearby, a pair of worn rubber boots stands upright in the wet sand, water still dripping from their soles into the shallow tide pools. In the background, the white-washed walls of the medina glow intensely, against the deep azure of the Atlantic. One kite, torn and trailing, lies half-buried in the driftwood, caught in the breeze that constantly sweeps through the port.
