Silhouetted Navratri Garba Circle at Delhi Night Market
by Aidan Good
Honeyed evening light washes over Connaught Place, casting the dancers of a Navratri Garba ceremony into deep silhouette. A large circle of participants moves in ritual stillness, their traditional chaniya choli and kurtas outlined against the fading sky. The circular formation creates layers of depth, with figures in the foreground sharply defined while others recede into the warm glow of the market stalls behind them. Early spring air hangs clear, allowing the street lamps and shop signs to puncture the darkening blue. The rhythmic clapping hands and raised skirts form a continuous ring around the central open space. Sharp edges of the dancers' jewelry catch the last light, creating bright points of reflection against their dark forms. The concrete floor of the plaza absorbs the movement, at the base of the floating shapes in the urban geometry of the colonnade.
