Shoe Shiner in Jaipur
by Damon Wise
Under the harsh glare of sodium streetlights in Jaipur, a roadside shoe-shine station operates with practiced efficiency on a cracked concrete slab. The foreground is dominated by the scuffed leather of a customer's sandal resting on a metal footrest, while the shoe shiner’s hands work a cloth over the toe with rhythmic precision. Behind them, the intricate ironwork of a traditional jaali screen casts geometric shadows against a painted pink stucco wall, at the base of the scene in Rajasthani architecture. A sudden gust lifts the edge of a nearby plastic curtain, revealing a glimpse of a dimly lit shop interior before the fabric snaps back into place.
