Copper-toned light spills across a busy sidewalk near Abiko, illuminating a shoe shiner crouched low to the ground. Early autumn leaves, turning russet and gold, scatter along the curb where the worker sits. A brief sun shower creates shimmering puddles that reflect the warm glow of nearby street lamps and the firelight from a small portable heater. The shiner's hands move with practiced rhythm over a leather shoe, while raindrops catch the air in translucent arcs. Pedestrians in light jackets hurry past, their shadows stretching long against the wet pavement. A red plastic stool rests beside the worker, its color vibrant against the grey stone, and a small towel hangs from the handle, dripping water onto the ground.
