Shepherd Counts Sheep Through Village Gate
by Elsa Neal
Heavy gray clouds press low over the Gold Coast village lane, diffusing the midsummer light into a flat, cool wash. A shepherd stands in profile, framed by the narrow, weathered wood of a rustic gate that cuts across the composition. The figure wears a faded, earth-toned jacket and leans slightly forward, head bowed as hands gesture toward a flock of white sheep squeezing through the opening. Dust motes hang suspended in the still air, visible only where the light strikes the dry, packed earth of the lane. The stone wall on the left runs parallel to the gate, creating a strong leading line that pulls toward the animals moving into the shadowed background. The texture of the rough-hewn gate contrasts with the soft, woolly coats of the sheep. One sheep's ear catches the dull light as it passes the threshold.
