A cramped residential balcony in Shanghai glows under the mixed artificial light of the city at night. A clothesline strung across the narrow space holds drying shirts and trousers, silhouetted against the distant glow of neon signs and streetlamps. Potted geraniums sit in chipped ceramic pots along the railing, their red flowers bright against the dark metal bars. Below, the tiled floor is scattered with a plastic basin and a pair of worn slippers. The dense, lived-in reality of urban housing, where private domestic space merges with the vibrant, chaotic energy of the metropolis outside.
