Serving Grapes in Hanoi

by Clyde Lawson

Cool early morning light falls through the dense canopy of an Old Quarter tree, casting dappled shadows across a narrow sidewalk where a street vendor balances a woven bamboo tray. The tray holds a cluster of dark purple grapes, their skins dusted with morning dew, resting beside a stack of colorful majolica plates used for serving pho. A customer in a conical hat extends a hand, fingers brushing the cool ceramic rim, while the vendor’s apron, stained with turmeric and soy sauce, hangs loosely.
