Serving Congee in Shanghai at First Light Of Dawn

by Wendy McFarland

Early morning light falls through the mist over a bustling Shanghai street corner where a vendor tends to a large steaming pot. A customer in a dark jacket holds a white ceramic bowl filled with thick congee topped with slices of century egg. The vendor uses a ladle to serve the hot soup while steam rises into the cool air. Nearby, cardboard boxes and plastic containers are stacked near the entrance of a narrow alleyway typical of the city's dense residential districts. The routine breakfast ritual of locals, with wet pavement reflecting the soft gray sky and the quiet activity of the neighborhood waking up.
