Service Break in Paris
by Kurt Bravo
A Parisian sidewalk cafe terrace glows under the amber light of late afternoon, where zinc tables show the circular water rings from cooling glasses. A waitress in a crisp white apron pauses near a wrought-iron chair, her leather work boot resting against a brass boot scraper mounted on a stone pillar. The brushed steel surface of a nearby trash bin catches a shallow, distorted reflection of the passing traffic and the blue sky. A hand broom leans casually against the wall, bristles worn from sweeping crumbs and cigarette butts. The quiet intermission of service, with the warm light highlighting the texture of the stone facade and the polished metal fixtures that define the neighborhood's character.
