Second-hand Goods in Cape Town

Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast midday, a street vendor in Woodstock arranges his wares on a corrugated iron table outside a brick warehouse. A faded blue plastic laundry basket sits open, spilling out tangled lengths of colorful fabric scraps and a few discarded buttons. Next to it, a stainless steel kettle rests on a small portable gas burner, steam faintly rising into the damp air. A tabby cat with orange patches sleeps curled on a pile of folded denim near the edge of the frame, ignoring the passersby. The vendor’s hands, stained with ink, carefully sort through a stack of vintage keys placed in a chipped ceramic bowl.
