Torches blaze in rhythmic arcs as a Scottish Hogmanay procession moves through a Chongqing street at midnight. Beams from overhead lighthouses sweep across the crowd, cutting through the deep summer night with stark, high-contrast light. Participants in heavy wool coats and tartan sashes hold flaming staffs that cast long, dancing shadows against the brick facades. The clear air holds the glow of fire steady against the cool blue shadows of the alleyway. Sparks rise vertically into the darkness above the cobblestones. A bright ember lands on a wet stone, sizzling briefly before fading into the grey texture of the pavement.
