Dust hangs low above the dry earth near Salem, catching the soft, diffused light of a late afternoon. A saddler works intently on a leather saddle mounted to a horse-shaped wooden stand. The thick hide shows deep creases and a rich, worn brown texture against the pale, dusty ground. Fine fibers of thread emerge from the needle, pulled tight by the artisan's hands. The wide panoramic view shows the expansive, dry landscape stretching into the distance, where the horizon blurs slightly in the suspended particulate matter. Sunlight filters gently through the overcast sky, casting muted shadows that define the contours of the leather and the rough wood of the stand. The final stitch anchors the saddle's edge to the wooden form.
