River Channel in Los Angeles

by Brielle Mata

Sunlight spills across the wide expanse of the Los Angeles River channel, casting long, sharp shadows from the concrete embankments onto the riparian vegetation. In the mid-ground, a cluster of metal stools and a lone folding chair sit abandoned near a chain-link fence, remnants of an unauthorized gathering or a maintenance break. The horizon line cuts cleanly through the frame, separating the hazy, sun-bleached hills of the San Fernando Valley from the pale blue sky. A few scattered seed trays and mixing bowls lie overturned in the dry riverbed, ignored by the passing light.
