Resident at First Light
by Erika Lowery
Rain-slicked Victorian terraced houses line a narrow London street, their red brick facades glowing under the flat, diffused light of early morning. A damp pavement reflects the muted sky, while a single black iron postbox stands sentinel near a bus stop shelter. A local resident, wrapped in a bright yellow waterproof coat, pushes a pram past a row of parked bicycles, their tires leaving faint tracks in the wet asphalt. Steam rises from a nearby manhole cover, mixing with the cool air, while a faded 'No Entry' sign hangs crookedly from a lamppost. The quiet, wet rhythm of the city waking up, with no grand gestures, just the honest, everyday movement of life continuing despite the weather.
