Strip-light spill from late-night checkout lanes washes over a polished cash wrap counter before dawn. A metal measuring-weight rail sits ready for use, its surface reflecting the damp, gray daylight streaking across the front glass. Raindrops rest on the window, blurring the dark parking lot beyond into soft, indistinct shapes. Stacks of empty shopping bags rest nearby, their crisp edges catching the warm interior shadows. The floor gleams with a wet sheen, mirroring the overhead fixtures. A small sign in Spanish stands near the scale, anchoring the scene in Quito's rainy season. The metal rail remains still, waiting for the morning rush to begin. one drop of water traces a slow path down the glass pane.
