Prep Area in Fukuoka
by Luke Hanna
Golden hour light spills across a narrow Fukuoka alleyway, catching the wet sheen of recent rain on grey paving stones. A small family-run kitchenette spills onto the sidewalk, where a stainless steel rack holds mismatched ceramic bowls and a mug tree stands crowded with chipped mugs. Beside it, a worn wooden cutting board bears the deep knife marks of decades of prep, while a paring knife rests near a plate of sliced geraniums, their vibrant red petals against the dull metal. In the background, the warm glow of a paper lantern illuminates a half-closed shoji screen, and a discarded scarf hangs loosely over a bamboo fence, fluttering slightly in the evening breeze.
