In the predawn darkness of Fez, Morocco, a narrow stone alleyway is dimly lit by the harsh, blue-white glare of a single overhead bulb. A vendor arranges bright red geraniums in terracotta pots along the base of a textured, ochre-colored wall, their vibrant color against the deep shadows. A young boy in a simple white thobe walks past, his face illuminated briefly by the light as he carries a woven basket. The wet cobblestones reflect the sparse illumination, creating streaks of light on the ground. The quiet, early morning routine of the medina before the city fully wakes, with the rough texture of the ancient walls and the smooth leaves of the plants providing visual depth.
