In the deep predawn darkness of Oaxaca, Mexico, a narrow cobblestone street is dimly lit by the faint glow of a distant streetlamp. A weathered wooden bench sits against a stucco wall, its slats showing patches of orange rust around the iron bolts. Beside the bench, a stack of folded white bath towels rests on a low concrete ledge, perhaps left out by a nearby home. The scene is quiet and still, with the dark outlines of colonial buildings framing the narrow alleyway. The damp air rests on the stone, and the only movement is the subtle shift of shadows as the first hints of morning begin to approach the horizon.
