A horizontal photograph shows a Chicago street corner in the deep blue of predawn darkness. The scene is dominated by the stark geometry of a CTA train station entrance, its steel grates and concrete pillars standing in sharp relief against the dim sky. A thick, low-lying steam haze rises from a nearby subway vent, curling around the base of a rusted fire escape ladder that rests on the side of a brick building. The haze obscures the lower windows of the adjacent structure, adding mystery to the urban landscape. One streetlamp casts a cool, artificial glow on the wet pavement, reflecting the faint red tail lights of a distant vehicle moving along the empty road.
