In the deep predawn darkness of Cape Town, a lone street vendor adjusts a heavy, patterned quilt draped over a wooden cart to shield goods from the chill. The scene is illuminated by the harsh, flickering glow of a nearby sodium streetlamp, casting long, sharp shadows against the weathered brick facade of a nearby building. A few early risers, bundled in coats, walk past, their faces obscured by the low light. The vendor’s hands, rough from work, carefully tuck the quilt’s edge, ensuring the produce inside remains warm.
