Before dawn breaks over Salvador, a street vendor stands beside a wooden cart in the narrow cobblestone streets of Pelourinho. The vendor arranges large wheels of queijo canastra on a cloth, their pale surfaces catching the dim ambient light from a nearby streetlamp. Beside the cheese, a few taper candles sit unlit in glass holders, waiting for the evening rush. The vendor wears a faded shirt and leans against the cart, watching the empty street. In the background, the curved colonial architecture of the historic district rises in shadow, with wrought-iron balconies and arched doorways visible in the low light. One bicycle rests against a wall nearby, its wheels still.
