Pre-dawn Montreal street scene with snow-covered trams and historic architecture

by Bruce Sweeney

The still hours before dawn cast a deep blue hue over a Montreal intersection near the Old Port. Snow piles up against the curb, against the wet asphalt reflecting the orange glow of sodium streetlights. A red and silver STM tram glides silently past, its windows bright against the dark sky. Historic stone buildings with wrought-iron balconies line the street, their facades detailed and textured in the low light. A few pedestrians in heavy winter coats hurry along the sidewalk, their breath visible in the cold air. The quiet, industrial charm of the city before the morning rush, with the tram tracks disappearing into the misty distance.
