The pale blue light of early morning washes over the weathered stone ramparts of Essaouira, Morocco. A local man stands near the edge of the fortification, his hands resting on the cold iron railing where concentric water rings mark the surface from recent rain or sea spray. In his palm, he holds a string of wooden prayer beads, the grains worn smooth by years of use. The wind from the Atlantic tugs gently at his loose shirt, while the distant silhouette of the Skala du Port rises against the dim sky. A quiet, solitary moment before the city wakes, showing the texture of the aged masonry and the rhythmic presence of the beads against the vast, open horizon.
