Pottery Vendor Glazed Bowls Market Boat
Overcast late afternoon light flattens the colors on a narrow wooden boat moored in El Mahalla El Kubra. Stacks of glazed ceramic bowls in earthy ochre, deep indigo, and matte terracotta line the gunwales, their wet surfaces reflecting the grey sky. A vendor in a loose linen shirt arranges the rim of a shallow bowl, fingers brushing the cool clay. Behind the stall, the canal stretches into a haze of mist, lined with other flat-bottomed vessels and reeds turning brown with the season. The water laps gently against the hull, carrying ripples that distort the reflection of the stacked ceramics. A faded blue rope secures the boat to a wooden piling, frayed at the ends where the fiber meets the damp wood.
