Under a flat, overcast sky in a Cape Town courtyard, a woman in a faded floral apron kneels on a plastic camp stool beside a chipped white enamel wash basin. She is scrubbing a large blue and white porcelain bowl, the kind common in local kitchens, using a stiff brush. Dried paint drips on the basin’s rim suggest it doubles as a utility sink. Behind her, a wooden tool pegboard hangs on a weathered brick wall, holding a cake knife and other hardware. A stack of paperbacks rests on a nearby ledge, protected from the damp air.
