Pocket Sundial on Milan Street Corner Late Afternoon
by Rita Frazier
A brass pocket sundial rests on a weathered granite ledge of a Milanese building facade, catching the low, golden angle of late afternoon sun. The shadow of the gnomon stretches precisely across the engraved hour markers, creating a sharp contrast against the warm metal. Behind the instrument, the rough texture of the stone wall shows years of grime and subtle moss growth in the crevices. Sunlight falls through nearby plane tree leaves, casting dappled patterns of light and shadow that dance across the brass surface and the adjacent cobblestones. A small patch of dried ivy rests on the corner of the ledge, adding a touch of organic green to the scene. The light reveals the fine scratches and patina on the sundial's case, evidence of frequent handling. The warm glow of the setting sun illuminates the dust motes hovering just above the stone surface.
