Under the sodium-vapor glow of a Cape Town street corner, a young man sits on a low concrete wall, balancing a worn leather basketball on his knee. The ball’s pebbled texture catches the orange spill from a nearby streetlamp, against the dark fabric of his tracksuit. Behind him, a faded blue shuttered window reflects the ambient city light, while a patterned rug hangs loosely from a balcony above, its geometric shapes distorted by the motion of the night breeze. A small, dented metal basket sits empty on the pavement beside him, holding a discarded plastic wrapper that glints in the shadow.
