Pigeons after dark in Copenhagen

by Barry Powell

Two pigeons perch on the rusted iron railing of a Copenhagen balcony, their grey feathers catching the orange glow of streetlamps below. One bird turns its head to preen a wing while the other watches the dark canal water reflecting neon signs from across the street. The tiled floor beneath them is scattered with dry leaves that cast sharp, intricate shadows against the warm ambient light. One fresh apple core sits abandoned near the edge of the railing, its red skin dimly illuminated by the passing city traffic.
