Philadelphia Funicular Climbing Steep Hill at Nautical Dawn

The Philadelphia & Western Railway funicular ascends the steep incline of Washington Square West, its steel cars reflecting the pale blue light of nautical dawn. Passengers stand inside the open-air car, holding onto vertical poles as the mechanism pulls them upward toward the city streets. Below, the historic row houses line the narrow sidewalk, their brick facades catching the early morning light. A few pedestrians walk along the pavement, bundled in jackets against the cool air. The functional rhythm of urban transit in a historic district, with the mechanical movement of the railway contrasting against the static architecture of the surrounding neighborhood.
