Petri Dish Culture on Stainless Tray in Hanover Observatory

by Alex Roth

Low-hanging autumn clouds filter the twilight sky above Hanover, casting a cool blue-grey glow into the observatory where instruments are just beginning to warm. On a stainless steel tray sits a petri dish culture, its circular glass rim sealed tightly with strips of translucent blue tape. The agar inside shows faint, organized bacterial growth patterns in muted creams and pale yellows, visible against the darkening room. Overhead lights reflect softly on the metal surface of the tray, while the city lights outside begin to puncture the gloom through high windows. The blue tape edges curl slightly at the corners, catching the dim ambient light. One shadow from the dish rim falls sharply across the polished steel.
