Noon light on Cusco stone walls with dried herbs and flour dust in in Cusco, Peru

Noon light on Cusco stone walls with dried herbs and flour dust

by Ricardo Khan

Under the harsh, flat glare of high noon, a narrow alley in Cusco reveals colonial stone walls built from massive, irregularly fitted andesite blocks. A local vendor stands near a wooden stall, arranging small bundles of dried herbs that resemble cloves, their brown buds against the grey rock. Fine white flour dust coats the lower stones near the vendor’s feet, kicked up from the grinding activity inside the shop. A candid street moment where the bright sunlight casts sharp, deep shadows across the textured masonry, highlighting the daily commerce and the enduring, weathered surfaces of the historic city without any staged composition.
