A rain-slicked cobblestone alley in the French Quarter glows under the amber wash of a sodium streetlamp late at night. A vintage metal kitchen stool sits tilted against a peeling stucco wall adorned with wrought-iron balcony shadows. Thick steam haze rises from a nearby vent, drifting across the sill edge of a ground-floor window. The wet pavement reflects the distorted neon sign of a closed jazz bar down the block. A discarded newspaper lies near the curb, its ink bleeding slightly in the damp air. The quiet, lived-in texture of the city after midnight, with no people present, only the lingering evidence of evening activity.
