Mottled khaki and olive drab helmets rest on a rough concrete ledge under the pale, diffused glow of a late afternoon sky. The ground is coated in a fine layer of dry dust, kicked up by the unseen rotor wash of a helicopter hovering nearby. Each helmet shows signs of use, with scuffed paint and attached chin straps hanging loosely. Behind the shelf, a chain-link fence separates the checkpoint lane from the open terrain. The air holds a visible haze of suspended particles that catch the soft light, creating a shimmering veil over the scene. A soldier's shoulder in a crisp uniform occupies the foreground, framing the view from over the shoulder as they wait for the formation to begin.
