A vintage narrow gauge train with open-air wooden carriages moves along a curved track beneath the bright midmorning sun in Cape Town. Passengers sit casually on the slatted benches, some leaning against the rusted metal railings while others look out toward the distant Table Mountain. The train’s black steam engine emits a thin trail of white vapor into the clear blue sky. Green shrubbery and dry grass line the embankment beside the tracks, against the red lacquered wood accents on the carriage interiors. A candid moment of local transport, with the rhythmic motion of the wheels and the casual posture of the riders showing everyday life in this coastal city.
