Morning Haze Over Barceloneta Water Tower
by Gail Mathews
Early summer sunlight breaks through dramatic, layered clouds, illuminating a concrete water tower that rises above low residential rooftops in Barceloneta. The first rays of sunrise cast long, soft shadows across the weathered brick and stucco surfaces of the neighborhood houses. Thick morning haze softens the edges of the distant transmission towers, creating a visual path that runs upward toward the cylindrical structure. The sky displays a gradient from pale gold near the horizon to deep slate gray above the cloud formations. Dust motes are not visible, but the air appears thick with moisture that mutes the background details. A rusted metal railing on the tower base catches a sharp highlight against the duller gray concrete. The scene is defined by the verticality of the infrastructure against the horizontal spread of the low housing.
