Warm amber light from a brass candlestick falls across a polished boardroom table in an Oral office. A metallic postal meter counter sits at the center, its dials and levers reflecting the flickering flame. Deep shadows pool around the base of the machine and stretch toward the dark corners of the room. Late spring is visible through the heavy curtains drawn tight against the night window. Faint smudges mark the metal casing near the stamp lever, showing daily use. Beside the meter, a single sheet of paper rests flat, its edge slightly curled. The light reflects sharply off the chrome numbers, creating bright points against the dark wood grain of the table. Condensation forms on the cool glass of a water tumbler placed at the edge of the wood surface.
